It is not uncommon for adolescents with eating disorders will not talk. They use disordered eating behaviors to hide or distracting thoughts and feelings do not know how to express. However, we hope to put into words what they live.
It is difficult to get your teen to talk, let alone one who has an eating disorder. Here are some tips to have discussions with your daughter or son.
Be short and simple. We adults tend to overwhelm teens with words. The parents speak often of paragraphs or pages to your children and have the chance to get a sentence to change.
Sometimes, as a therapist tell me something and I know immediately when I lost. I have a blank stare and hope they say "Huh?" or "What you just said?" I realize that using too many words and try to simplify the best I can. You've probably seen this look too white. Watch it and adjust accordingly. The fewer words used the better.
Adolescents are very frustrated when adults talk to death. Ask short, simple question. "What was the hardest part of the week?" Then, in the silence and wait for a response. Do not fill the silence. My experience is that often, young people need to think and if I wait until the end shall speak and say what they really think. We adults are too quick on the draw.
Do not expect much in-depth discussions. If they sometimes large, but often teenagers talking in spurts between stupidity, silence or some other distraction. Just keep him back on track after Change the subject. They are anxious and uncomfortable to talk about their thoughts and feelings is a way to reduce anxiety.

Make use of this light and humorous. I often tell my clients to teenagers, you have to go change the subject. " Or "Nice try, but have not answered my question yet." They will smile or laugh, and I could say: "Yes, you're busted. "Just Be quiet and do not treat it like life or death if they speak or not.
Try to keep the moments when you have fun … fun. It is not reality yet and capture your teen in a good mood, but I do not want to spoil something good. Maybe a good way of seeing things is to catch them when they are in a neutral space.
When you have a property to a shopping, eating lunch, taking them Hopefully something to fill their tanks with emotional conversation positive and affirming. Enjoy them instead of trying to use their positive mood to talk about difficult issues.
